International partnerships and exchanges
Although there are numerous opportunities for events and collaboration with the Lyon region, specific structures have been set up to give an official backing to the relations developed with certain partners. It is for this reason that the metropolitan area of Lyon focuses on a network strategy, whether through specially formed organizations or one-off opportunity groups.

Human and technical exchanges have always contributed to development and reinforced know-how, while strengthening friendships. In this way, Lyon can promote its trademark skills and special identity by means of numerous partnerships and by hosting international events.

In today's world of global economy and exchanges, the international stature of a city takes on strategic significance. The Department of International Relations of the City of Lyon, responsible for implementing the programs decided by the Mayor and elected officials, has a key role to play. The Department of International Relations works hand in hand with other entities contributing to the international development of the city. Its role is to encourage and coordinate initiatives. Over the years, the Department of International Relations has built a diverse and high-quality network of relations with 17 cities throughout the world. The aim of these multi-sector official partnerships is to:
- reinforce Lyon's image, impact and presence abroad
- develop Lyon's appeal and offer the best welcome and services to our foreign partners
- foster the exchange of information to promote our fields of expertise and to tap into the knowledge of others
- encourage collaborative actions to create a dynamic interface with our counterparts
- promote solidarity among cities through decentralized cooperation

The role of the Department of International Relations:
- Develop the current network of partnerships: - by intensifying economic, scientific, academic, scholastic, cultural and information exchanges, - by objectively evaluating existing and proposed agreements
- Host foreign delegations and VIP's (Heads of State, ambassadors, etc.) , citizens of our partner cities
- Assist the organization and management of major national and international events to be held in the Lyon area
- Participate in the work of inter-city networks across the world and the activities of Lyon-based international organizations.
