Public spaces

Though the Tête d’Or Park is certainly the most famous green haven and true emblem of the city since 1856, there is a wealth of gardens, squares, streets and embankments that punctuate the landscape. They offer an array of visual and botanical styles that beckon the casual passerby. This quality and diversity is the fruit of an ambitious policy for the development of public spaces. The aim is to re-conquer the city from the omnipresent automobile and to give it a clear identity by utilizing a limited number of materials, plants and fixtures. Since 1989, more than 150 public spaces in Lyon and the metropolitan area have been remodeled by famous French urban designers and landscape artists. Each has his own style but created a unified and coherent space thanks to a common set of guidelines used by all.

Measures taken in favor of enhancing public spaces are an integral part of an overall policy concerning town planning which includes, among others, the new Lighting Plan, a Green Plan (protection of nature areas), a Blue Plan (development of the river banks and their environment) and a Color Plan (palette of colors imposed on buildings along the quays and large complexes). Lyon's program of renovating and developing public spaces has won the city recognition as a European innovator in the field of urban design.
