The Confluence
The Perrache peninsula, once devoted to industry and transport, is undergoing profound changes. A project for the confluence zone, a major urban redevelopment plan spanning 25 years, aims to fully optimize the strategic location of this previously neglected zone by reconverting abandoned industrial plots and enhancing the river banks. Plans include a leisure and recreation zone, restaurants and cultural facilities.
The confluence, located very close to the center of Lyon, has vast tracts of available land and is a perfect setting for high-quality landscaping along the banks of the Rhone and Saône. A new district will emerge from this plan, grouping a variety of functions: service activities, residential complexes, leisure zone, shops, public services and facilities.
A pedestrian and cycle path along the river has already been laid out. The Municipal Archives of Lyon moved to the area in the Spring of 2001, into the former postal sorting center built in the 19th century.
The future Confluence Museum, a project of the Rhône Département General Council, covering more than 20,000 sq. m., will be built at the confluence point of the Rhone and Saône. It is scheduled to open in 2006.
