UNESCO world heritage site.

You are in the heart of a five hundred hectare site, where the entire 2000 year history of Lyon unfolds before you. Throughout this time, the site has been home to a dynamic population and thriving activities.

"Lyon is a prime example of human settlement, an exceptional witness to enduring urban installation over more than two millennia", declared UNESCO'S World Heritage Committee.

In most European towns, the different districts have developed on existing sites. The geographical location of Lyon, however, has enabled the city's districts to extend towards the East over the centuries, thus providing a remarkable physical continuity between each era's centers.

Today, life goes on in Lyon's historical center, in the heart of the city, with its restaurants, hotels, shops, cultural and leisure sites. A center that continues to move with the times, restore its buildings, and which is mindful of the harmony of its squares, hills and rivers.

Through four selected itineraries, Lyon invites you to immerse yourself in history, from ancient times to the Renaissance period. To find out more and to discover the secrets of the city's past, click here.
